Eyecare Tips For Monsoon

7564

Monsoon season although delightful, a little care for your eyes can go a long way in preventing infections and keeping them healthy so that you can enjoy the rains.

Monsoons bring with them an army of infections that cause eye pain and discomfort, so ignoring your eyes is probably not a good idea. Viral infections thrive and spread during this season due to the increased moisture in the air. Proper eye care should become a major priority during monsoons to help protect your eyes from infections like conjunctivitis, stye, dry eyes and corneal ulcers which can lead to blindness.

Do your eyes look red or swollen? Do they itch? It’s probably because of insignificant eye care during the monsoons. Eye problems are widespread during the rains. But no matter how aware you are, they are contagious.

Here are some of the eye care tips that can be followed:

  • Eye specialists highly recommended that you and the people around you wash hands regularly. Wearing dark glasses can help ease the pain from the sun’s glare or brightness and the need to be wiped with a clean cloth so that is it clear of any germs. Gently spraying cold water at least 3-4 times during the day helps too.
  • Conjunctivitis can be due to viral infection or bacteria. The doctor prescribes medications as its a self-limiting disease and will go away if you take precaution. If, despite undertaking the precautions, you get infected, avoid wearing contact lenses and going for a swim. It only aggravates the problem.
  • Dry eyes can cause blurred vision in extreme cases if there is any irritation and loss of lubrication in the eye. Blinking helps, and It gets worse when we rub our eyes with dirty hands. A soothing eye drop usually does the job as well.
  • A Corneal Ulcer is a severe form of eye infection resulting from fungal or bacterial infection. Contact lens users are commonly susceptible to it. Consulting an eye specialist immediately is highly advisable as it affects the vision resulting in total loss of vision and a corneal transplant in extreme cases as well.
  • Eating healthy food such as fruits and vegetables, in particular, is highly recommended since they contain antioxidants beneficial for the eyes.
  • Avoid sharing your towel and similar personal items that come in contact with your eyes with others, because infections mostly spread through hands, clothes and other commonly touched items. That must not be shared.
  • A Stye is a common eye infection that occurs during monsoons and is caused due to bacteria. It manifests as a painful lump along the eyelid and is usually treated with the help of a warm compress to release the pus and decrease swelling.
  • In the case of red-eye, avoid over-the-counter eye drops as they may contain steroids which can be harmful, and seek expert advice. Also, avoid using a contact lens during this period.
