Lasik Surgery, stands for Laser in-situ Keratomileusis, LASIK is a prevalent eye surgery employed to correct vision in people who are farsighted, nearsighted or experience astigmatism. All Lasik surgery or laser-based vision correction eye surgeries function by reshaping cornea, which is a clear front portion of the eye, such that the light traveling via it is focused properly towards the retina.
LASIK surgery is an outpatient procedure, there is no need for getting admitted for this. Topical anesthetic drops are put into your eyes. After this you lie down on a bed and slide below the laser machine, much like what happens when you go for an MRI. Then you must follow the instructions and keep looking towards the blinking red light of the machine while the doctor performs the laser eye surgery. You may experience some heaviness for a few seconds and a temporary disappearance of the flickering light. The procedure takes around three to four minutes per eye. At the end your eye is washed thoroughly and sometimes a contact lens is placed on the eye for better healing.
Lasik Surgery is an FDA approved procedure. As with any other eye surgery such as cataract surgery, laser eye surgery, glaucoma surgery and others, it is recommended that you go by doctor’s instructions and the medication is taken as prescribed.
While LASIK surgery has a great success rate, it is significant that you discuss all the facets of process with your specialist before consenting to the Lasik surgery. Few patients experience discomfort in the first one or two days after the surgery is performed. The other complications or side effects, though rare, may include,

It is a surgical procedure that uses an excimer laser to gently reshape the corneal surface by removing microscopic bits of tissue to flatten the cornea (to correct nearsightedness), steepen the cornea (to correct farsightedness) and/or smooth out corneal irregularities (to correct astigmatism).
Studies suggests that the incidence of minor difficulties such as dry eyes and nighttime glare is around 3% to 5%, while the risk of serious incidents such as lost vision is thought to be less than 1%. There are no known cases of blindness from Lasik or PRK. Again outcomes generally are very good.
The eyes are numbed with the help of topical anesthetic drops prior to the surgery. This ensures that you won’t feel pain during Lasik. You may feel heaviness in the eyes or a mild stretching feeling over the lids. You will be able to hear the surgeon’s instructions and must follow these correctly.
It’s a fairly quick procedure and will be over within 15 minutes, the effective laser time being usually under a minute per eye.

On the day of the surgery you may feel excessive watering of the eyes of a pricking sensation and may not be able to open the eyes fully. Next day onwards, you are able to see much clearer and the eyes are almost back to normal. Most people who have lasik return to work the next day. You may begin driving as soon as you see well enough, which is typically in a day or two. You may resume wearing makeup about one week after your surgery.
Dry eyes, glare and halos around bright lights are some of the commonly associated side effects with Lasik. These usually subside within a few months post operatively.
Depending on your surgeon, you will probably return the next day, then one week or one month later and then three months later. Your doctor will let you know if more visits are necessary.
Sometimes it’s possible that the number returns either partly or fully. This can be corrected with a re treatment and the surgeon will help you decide the correct time for this.
In fact Lasik is expensive all over the world but not so in India. People from all over come here to get their Lasik done as it’s very competitively priced.
Yes you can opt for Lasik but may need to continue wearing reading glasses post operatively.
