Gulal, Sparkler, or Cracker in the Eye: What to Do

Dr. Nikhil Nasta

Do not rub the eye or apply kajal, rose water, or ghee. Shield it and reach an eye surgeon the same hour. Festive eye injuries in Mumbai are time-critical.
If gulal, a sparkler, or a firecracker hits the eye, do not rub, do not press, and do not put kajal, ghee, rose water, or potato on it. For coloured powder or a chemical splash, rinse gently with clean water for several minutes and go straight to an eye surgeon. For a particle, a burn, or a hit from a cracker, shield the eye without pressure and reach an ophthalmologist the same hour. Vision can look almost normal while the damage is still unfolding.
If colour or a chemical splashes into your eye, start rinsing with plenty of clean water and seek urgent care. If a cracker or sharp object has injured it, avoid pressure and rubbing and get emergency help. Please skip home remedies in either situation.

First Hour, by Type of Injury

What hit the eyeDo thisDo not do this
Gulal, rang, or holi-style colourRinse with plenty of clean water. Remove contact lenses. Go to an eye doctorRub. The grains scratch the cornea while you rinse too little
Sparkler or match burnShield the eye. Same-hour ophthalmology visitBurst the blister, apply toothpaste, butter, or turmeric
Cracker blast or a flying particleSit still, shield with a paper cup or glasses, keep both eyes as calm as you canTry to pull the particle out. Pressure can worsen an open injury
Chemical from a cracker or cleaning fluid nearbyImmediate running clean water, then emergency care. Bring the packet if you canNeutralise with another liquid, lemon, or milk unless a doctor tells you to
Blunt hit: a ball, a dandiya stick, an elbowCold clean cloth on the brow or cheek, not pressing the eyeball. Get examinedAssume it is fine because the lid only looks bruised

Why Waiting Until Morning Costs Vision

A corneal abrasion from gulal is painful and treatable when it is seen early. A metallic or burnt particle from a sparkler can rust into the cornea overnight. A small cracker injury can include a torn eyelid, a cloudy lens, or a retinal problem that the person cannot see in a mirror. Children under-report pain because the celebration is still going on. If a child will not open the eye, that is enough reason to leave the function.

While You Are on the Way

  • Stop contact lens wear immediately
  • Keep the head slightly raised. Vomiting, double vision, or a sudden curtain in the vision is an emergency on top of the injury
  • Do not give a leftover steroid drop “to reduce redness”
  • Do not patch tightly. A loose shield is safer if you are unsure whether the eye is open
  • Go to an eye hospital or an ophthalmologist on call, not only a general casualty that will send you onward in the morning

Prevention for the Rest of the Season

Navratri gulal and Diwali crackers injure eyes every year in Mumbai, including people who were only standing nearby. Distance, glasses worn as a physical shield, and an adult lighting any firework are the practical protections. If an injury has already happened, Dr. Nikhil Nasta and the team at iSight Eye Care would rather see a false alarm the same night than a scar the next week. Frequently Asked Questions

If a particle, burn, or blast was involved, have it examined even when the pain settles. Some foreign bodies sit quietly and scar.
