Long sightedness and short sightedness are the two most common reasons people need glasses. They are opposite problems: in short sightedness (myopia) the eye focuses in front of the retina, so distance is blurry. In long sightedness (hyperopia / hypermetropia) the eye focuses behind the retina, so near work is harder — and in higher powers, distance can blur too.

Symptoms People Mix Up
Both can cause squinting, headaches and “tired eyes.” The pattern helps:
- Short sightedness: the whiteboard, bus numbers and night driving suffer first; the phone is easy
- Long sightedness: the phone, schoolwork and sewing suffer first; you may still pass a distance chart, especially when young
- Astigmatism (cylinder) can sit on top of either, adding shadowing and ghost images
- After 40, presbyopia (ageing of near focus) can look like new long sightedness even in a myope — that is a different mechanism
Can You Have Long and Short Sightedness Together?
One eye can be myopic and the other hyperopic (antimetropia), and many people have astigmatism plus either. You do not have myopia and hyperopia in the same meridian of the same eye at the same time. Mixed astigmatism is the situation where one meridian is myopic and the other hyperopic — that still needs a proper refraction, not guesswork from an online chart.

- Glasses or contact lenses — still the correct first answer for children and for anyone not ready for surgery
- Myopia-control strategies in children (outdoor time, specialist lenses, low-dose atropine where indicated) to slow a rising minus
