What Does a Retina Specialist Do?
A retina specialist is an ophthalmologist with additional fellowship training in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous. They manage diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachments, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, vascular occlusions, and many inherited or inflammatory conditions.
They also perform in-clinic lasers (including barrage laser around tears), intra-vitreal injections, and operating-theatre procedures such as vitrectomy. A general eye exam can suspect a problem; a retina work-up confirms it with dilated examination and imaging.
Warning Signs You Need a Retina Specialist
Book urgently — the same day if symptoms are sudden — if you notice:
- A sudden shower of new floaters (spots, dots, cobwebs) especially if they increase over hours
- Flashes of light in one or both eyes, like a camera flash or lightning arc in the side vision
- A dark shadow, grey curtain or shutter coming across the field of vision
- Sudden, unexplained blurring or a blank patch, particularly in central vision
- Straight lines looking wavy, bent or missing (a macular warning)
- A drop in vision in a person with diabetes, high blood pressure, or high myopia
- A curtain after recent cataract surgery, a blow to the eye, or known lattice degeneration
The Importance of Prompt Treatment
Flashes, a shower of floaters, or a dark curtain are the classic triad of a posterior vitreous detachment that may have torn the retina. A tear can be sealed with barrage laser in clinic if it is caught before the retina detaches. Once fluid peels the retina off the wall of the eye, surgery is required, and the longer the macula stays detached, the poorer the final reading vision.
This is not a 'let me finish my work week' problem. Same-day dilated exam is the correct response.
Who Should See a Retina Specialist Even Without New Symptoms
Some people need scheduled retina care, not only emergency visits:
- Anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes — at least yearly dilated exams, sooner if retinopathy is already present
- High myopia (typically more than about −6.00), which stretches the retina and raises tear and detachment risk
- A family history of retinal detachment, or a known lattice patch in either eye
- Age-related macular degeneration, or a close relative with AMD
- Previous retinal surgery, injections, or laser — follow-up is part of the treatment
- Unexplained poor vision that glasses do not correct
What to Expect at the Visit
Pupils are dilated. The specialist examines the retina with a slit lamp and often an indirect ophthalmoscope to see the far periphery where tears hide. OCT shows macular swelling or holes in cross-section. Fundus photographs and, when needed, fluorescein angiography or OCT-angiography map leaking or ischaemic vessels.
You will not drive yourself home after dilation. Bring a companion and sunglasses. If a tear is found, laser may be offered the same day. If a detachment is found, surgery is planned promptly — sometimes that evening.
