Will you need glasses after cataract surgery? It depends on the IOL: monofocal, EDOF, trifocal or toric. Learn what each lens still needs glasses for.
Often yes for some tasks — but not always for all distances. A monofocal lens is usually set for distance, so you still need reading glasses. Toric monofocals can also treat astigmatism. EDOF and trifocal (multifocal) lenses reduce glasses for intermediate and near work, with a trade-off of possible night halos. The honest answer is chosen at counselling, not promised as “never glasses again.”

Why Nobody Can Promise Zero Glasses

  • Macular disease, glaucoma or irregular corneas limit what any lens can deliver
  • Your brain needs weeks to adapt to a multifocal or EDOF pattern
  • Residual small numbers are normal; a light pair of glasses for night driving or tiny print is still a success
  • If only one eye is done, the other cataract or old glasses prescription will still interfere

Questions That Decide Your Lens

Night driving hours, how much you read, whether you hate the idea of readers, and how you would feel about halos matter more than a brochure. A retina check before premium lenses is not optional. If the macula is unhealthy, a monofocal is often the kinder choice.
